PROJECTS:

Multi-functional wireless access control system – mWAC (project associate - coordinator)
Electronic Access Control System is a selective restriction of access to a place or other resources and has been used for a long time. The concept itself is composed of access control mechanism to allow or deny access to places and resources with electronic identity authentication. Electronic identity is mainly enforced by usage of magnetic and radio cards or specialized devices. Tracking objects and people through the spatio temporal domain as well as one card per object gives the personalized identity which allows usage simplicity. The proposed project encompasses wireless sensor network (WSN) implementation in conjunction with embedded computer systems. The goal is to implement hybrid solution that would be fault tolerant, price competitive, data distributed and free of large infrastructure, complex setup and usage. Low priced access points will provide more effective solution than existing systems. Project aim is to prove technical implementation of large number of access points in ACS using WSN which is not suited for real-time communication. Furthermore, reliability validation of system speed of communication is metrics that will span the whole project timespan. Main project activities are: simulation of proposed system solution and implementation of functional prototype installed and used at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering Osijek financed by the PoC (30 access points). Testing the system reliability from Access Points to Coordinator devices will be conducted using WSN which will lead to enhanced modelling of real-time communication. The main administration Web application will be developed as a standard Cloud based solution using shared services and infrastructure. Desired goals will be reached by POC financial support for communication system, using Faculty of Electrical Engineering resources, project associates and one newly employed engineer.

Capacitive passive identification system – capsid (project associate)
Capacitive passive identification system (capsID) is an electronic system for monitoring and security identification of products, movable and immovable objects and living beings. The proposed system is based on the concept used by existing identification systems and it consists of two seperate devices: the tag and tag reader. The tag can be active or passive. Active tags have their own power supply (usually a battery), while passive tags have no on-board power supply, but instead are wirelessly powered by the reader device. A key technical feature of the proposed system is capacitive wireless energy transfer from reader device to passive tag. Capacitive powering enables integration of the passive tag within an object, inside of a product, and implantation in living beings. In addition, a major advantage of the capacitive powering is the ability to operate within the metal (electrically conductive) object. Such feature is not available in inductively powered ID systems which are dominant nowadays. Proof of concept is needed to verify the innovativity of the concept through the patent application, and to determine to what extent the set technical requirements will be met by the functional prototype. Comparison of fulfilled technical requirements and market requirements will determine the commercial potential of innovative concept. The expected final result of the project is a functional system prototype which consists of an active reader and passive tag which uses capacitive energy transfer from the reader to the passive tag, and enables data transmission from passive tag to reader, with an emphasis on the ability to work inside the metal (electrically conductive) object.

Passive Wireless Sensor Network for Enviromental Monitoring (project associate)
The aim of the project is the use of energy harvesting methods to develop and build a prototype passive wireless sensor node that does not need additional power. Another main objective of the project is to enable effective transfer of data collected optimizing several segments of wireless sensor networks. The emphasis will be placed on the routing protocols and data aggregation in order to establish effective communication. Advantages of such a system would be particularly pronounced in the application of agricultural production where monitoring microclimate throughout cultivation of great importance. It is expected that the project will be proven to be a reliable operation of the wireless sensor node, using only energy collected harvest energy. The study of the project and the research of existing and development of new methods of harvesting energy will be established levels of available energy for working electronic circuits. In addition to the proposed application of the WSN, testing and development of methods for harvesting energy will open up new possibilities for the application of passive circuits. Developing communication protocols optimized to work with the limited amount of energy will result in new knowledge in the field of guidance and data aggregation, which will provide long-term operation and maintenance of cheaper wireless sensor networks. The most important contribution of this research is to create the preconditions for the implementation and further development of passive wireless sensor networks whose use in agricultural production resulting in higher yield and efficient system of monitoring and early warning, as well as the likelihood of disease and the unfavourable conditions of production in some parts of the arable land.

Improvement of HM Supercritical Fluid Extraction System (project coordinator)
Oil extraction using supercritical fluids is an alternative method to replace or to complement conventional industrial process such as pressing and solvent extraction. Traditional solid-organic solvent extraction methods are very time-consuming, they required relatively large quantities of solvents, they leave toxic solvent residue, and cause degradation of unsaturated compounds due to the heat. Supercritical fluid extraction technique presents various advantages over traditional methods, like the use of low temperatures, reduced energy consumption and high product quality due to the absence of solvent in extracts. Carbon dioxide is most widely used compressed fluid because it is non-toxic, non-explosive, inflammable, cheap, readily available, easy removable from the product and possesses moderate critical properties (Tc=31.1°C, Pc=7.38 MPa). To achieve a supercritical state of the gas large pressures and temperatures are needed, resulting in a hazardous environment. An important aspect from control point of a view is having real time ability to monitor and control the process remotely, during normal operation or when imminent intervention is required. To achieve the desired functionality an embedded system architecture is proposed. A comprehensive analysis of the embedded system used for regulation, control and data monitoring will be performed

Wireless power transfer for underground and underwater sensors (project associate)
Usage of sensors and wireless sensor nodes is beginning to expand into new environment types: underwater and underground environment. With significantly different operating conditions, sensor powering is a special problem. Using batteries as a power supply is costly and inconvenient for sensors that are permanently implemented in underwater or underground environment. To facilitate implementation of sensors in underground and underwater environment, the sensors must use the wireless power transfer. Underwater and underground environments significantly impair the performance of wireless power transfer which is (according to the current State-of-the-Art) almost always developed for the transfer of energy by air. The project will address research of inductive and capacitive wireless power transfer in underground and underwater environment.

Broadband Internet access and Internet services in rural area (project associate)
A broad application and a very high availability of the broadband Internet access becomes a base for development of new services, primarily e-commerce, e-business, Life Long Learning (e-learning), broadband e-government and a personal huge data exchange between the users. Since availability of the broadband access in a highly urban and suburban area will very soon be sufficient (both technologically and economically), there remains an open question of the broadband Internet access in a rural area, i.e. the areas with an undeveloped information and communication infrastructure and sparsely populated areas. The problem of the broadband Internet access in rural areas is a very complex one and in order to find an efficient solution, it is necessary to include interdisciplinary researches and many different aspects. First, it is necessary to research a categorization of rural areas by different criteria: primary business, population density, geographic characteristics of the area and the available information and communication infrastructure (study case: Republic of Croatia). For respective categories it is required to research and ascertain sociological surroundings and to define potential services requiring a broadband access. On the basis of the defined services it is necessary to state the minimal service quality requirements for all service categories. On the basis of complex analyses technical and technological solutions of the broadband Internet access will be proposed for different categories of rural areas. For every proposed solution it will be necessary to perform an economical analysis of a prospective installation of new systems and market perspectives. By this step, it will be necessary to take into account development importance of rural areas for the total development, strategic food production, production of bio fuels etc.
